The first, and probably largest problem with this in my opinion, is that you are using far too much dialogue for the first few paragraphs of a story. Dialogue is one of the hardest things to do well when writing, and you have to be careful that you don't over-rely on it.

Also, while your character mentions that she's rambling, the whole first few paragraphs seem a little like they're rambling as well. There isn't much of a thread of a story, and nothing really happens – there's just a not-very-interesting conversation between two people who we don't know, and therefore don't care about much.

For the start of a romance book, you might be better off starting with a bit about Lauren's job, or perhaps her out with friends or at work. When your readers know about her life, they feel more emotionally connected and will wince with her when she falls over, rather than thinking 'that was silly' and be rooting for her in a romantic encounter. You could consider using this meeting later on in another chapter, as an introduction to your lead male character.

Finally, I also dislike the first sentence. Suggesting that someone would fall flat on their face because someone called their name is perhaps pushing the realms of clumsiness a little too far: it just doesn't really happen.

I do not advocate and have never advocated to keep children with mothers who cannot parent them, regardless of what some of you wish to believe. However, I am highly concerned with the lack of empathy and compassion in many of the answers. I do not have to be a victim of the foster care system to know something about it. I have seen extreme child abuse, have been a victim of sexual abuse as a child, my husband was neglected and so I base many of my answers on that but I do not see how being so cut and dry, black and white will ever be helpful.

Apprehending babies at birth is a huge thing to do and so should only be done in cases where it is obvious a mother will never change her habits. I have seen mothers who continue on and never change and it was the best thing to have their children removed because they kept falling back into the same habits and choices. But there are some mothers where removing their child is the kick in the backside they needed and if they straighten their lives out within a very short amount of time, I believe their child should be returned to them. (Short amount of time: up to 6 months)

Dishing out judgement like it appears some are doing rather liberally here is so easy. I wonder how you would feel facing the consequences of these judgements and you were wrong. Dead wrong. How could you live with yourselves? Or do you feel justified because in other instances it was right? Is ruining a person's life just because you have chips on your shoulders about something okay to you?

Yes, I am against adoption/removal of children unnecessarliy… but there are cases where I agree it is necessary; but I take each case on its merits or lack of. What I see here is a bunch of generalisations, misuse of facts being used to shove an agenda down people's throats and a hard line. Even women who are using drugs are people still. Do those of you who are so quick to cut her down even bother to look at the stories behind the use? There is usually a history of abuse in many cases and to so quickly judge without offering resources and the opportunity to change is continuing that cycle of abuse.

I am appalled at the lack of compassion in this section, yet again. Humanity is really at an all time low.

First; Search and highlight every "had, was, she said, and each characters name. " This will help you see how much redundancy is hiding in your writing. Your opening two words are an example.

Second; Find every place you are out right describing something. Try to find a way to bury that description in an action or a dialog. The story will get real snappy (and shorter) real fast.

Third; Alliterations, flash backs, wrong tenses, over used cliches- will al try to bull their way into your (everybody) writing and you will need to be vigilant to keep them under control.

I think you have a fun bouncy start to a Romance novel. There are a few facts getting in your way- minor stuff, but those people who carry $100. worth of new paper backs out of B&N every week will notice.

The most obvious is the minor damage done to "L" to her face from a "10" point nose plant–not even a nose bleed? Rather have the books fly as she protects her self (for the upteenth time ) from another clutzy move.

Continue your work- few were born writers, most were taught the skill.
